Pocket-Boxer docs

Version 0.9.0 (pre-release) · Updated September 26, 2026

These docs cover Pocket-Boxer 0.9.0, the release candidate for iPhone, iPad, and Apple Watch. Pocket-Boxer is not on the App Store yet, so a few steps describe how things will work once it is.

Getting started

Pocket-Boxer runs on iPhone and iPad with iOS 26 or later. The Apple Watch app is optional. It needs watchOS 26 or later and a paired iPhone, so Apple Watch features are not available on iPad.

Get the app

Pocket-Boxer has not been released and is not on the App Store or TestFlight yet. Request early access and we will tell you when it is available. Once it is out, you will install it from the App Store. The Apple Watch app comes with the iPhone app; if it does not appear on your watch, add it from the Watch app on your iPhone.

First launch

  1. Open Pocket-Boxer. Swipe through the four intro cards and tap Get Started, or tap Skip.
  2. The main screen, titled Intervals, has three sections: Fight IQ, with five starter drills; Intervals, for your rounds templates, which starts empty; and Station Rotation.
  3. Along the top, the lightning bolt opens Quick Start, the clock opens History, the gear opens Settings, the box with a down arrow imports a shared template, and New creates a rounds template, a drill, or a station preset.

Permissions

Pocket-Boxer asks only when a feature needs it: Camera to scan a QR code, Local Network for Coach and Fighter broadcasting, Health to save workouts and read heart and breathing rate, and Notifications the first time you reach a training milestone.

Rounds, stations, and templates

Quick Start

  1. Tap the lightning bolt on the main screen.
  2. Set Round Duration, Rest Duration, and Rounds. Turn on Loop to repeat until you stop.
  3. Tap Start. The timer opens, ready to go.

Quick Start timers are not saved. A round is at least 10 seconds long.

Build a rounds template

  1. Tap New, then New Interval, and type a name.
  2. Under Rounds, set each round's Work and Rest time. An optional round name, such as Warmup, replaces ROUND 1 on the timer. Add Round copies the last round's times; swipe left on a round to delete it.
  3. Under Warnings, tap Add Warning to choose how long before the end of each round a cue sounds. New templates start with 0:30 and 0:10.
  4. Under Bell Sounds, pick a sound for any cue, or leave it on Default.
  5. Loop is on for new templates. Turn it off if the session should end after the last round.
  6. Tap Save Template.

Later, swipe left on a template for Edit and Delete, or touch and hold it for Duplicate and the sharing options.

Run the timer

Tap a template under Intervals. The timer waits for you: tap the top half of the screen, and a count-in — 5, 4, READY, SET, GO — leads into round 1 with the bell. The bar along the top fills green during work and orange during rest.

The whole screen is a set of tap zones, called Glove Control:

Gesture Where What it does
Tap Top half Start, pause, or resume
Tap Bottom-left quarter Take 30 seconds off
Tap Bottom-right quarter Add 30 seconds
Double-tap Anywhere Move on to rest, the next round, or the next station
Touch and hold, 1 second Anywhere Reset to the start of round 1
Swipe left to right Anywhere Back to the main screen; the timer keeps running

The timer keeps your screen awake and follows Timer View Mode for landscape or portrait.

Leave, return, and stop

On the main screen, a card at the top shows the running session. Tap it to go back, or swipe it left and tap Stop. Starting another timer also replaces the running one. With Loop off, the session ends after the last round with four bells, four buzzes, and four flashes, then closes a few seconds later.

Station rotations

  1. Tap New, then New Station, and enter a Preset Name.
  2. Name each station and tap its time to set how long it lasts. Tap Add Station for more, or Edit to reorder and delete.
  3. Set Warnings, Bell Sounds, and Loop as for a rounds template.
  4. Tap Save, or Start to run it straight away.

Saved presets appear under Station Rotation; tap one to start it, or use Manage Stations to edit them. The station timer uses the same tap zones, shows the station's name and place at the bottom, and rings the bell at every change. Stations have no rest phase and no count-in.

Share and import

Touch and hold a rounds template on the main screen, a preset in Manage Stations, or a drill in Manage Drills:

  • Share file sends a .bxtemplate file by AirDrop, Messages, Mail, or Files.
  • Share via QR shows a code another Pocket-Boxer user can scan.
  • Send to paired device sends it to devices connected through Coach or Fighter broadcasting.

To bring one in, tap the box with a down arrow and choose Import from Files or Scan QR Code, or open a .bxtemplate file from Files, Mail, or Messages. Rename it if you like and tap Add to Library. Imports always arrive as new items, so nothing you have is overwritten.

Fight IQ drills

Fight IQ calls moves out loud during the work part of every round — punches, combos, defense, and footwork — on top of any rounds template. It changes focus about every 20 seconds and builds intensity toward the middle of each round, choosing moves at random within that plan.

Run a drill

  1. Make sure you have a rounds template. Fight IQ uses it for rounds and rest.
  2. Tap a drill under Fight IQ on the main screen, or its play button in Manage Drills.
  3. Under Pick a round structure, choose a rounds template.
  4. Tap Start, or anywhere on the screen. READY, SET, GO counts you in.
  5. Tap anywhere to pause or resume. Tap the red Stop button to end the drill.

The screen shows the round, the clock, the latest call, the current focus, such as Pressure or Defensive work, and an Intensity meter.

Build your own drill

  1. Tap New, then New Drill.
  2. Name it and set Cadence, from 0.1 to 5.0 seconds, for the pace of your combos. Random cadence varies the pace by up to half either way.
  3. Choose a Sport, Mode, and Skill Level.
  4. Under Combos, name each combo and tap + to add steps: a Punch, from 1 — Jab to 6 — Rear Uppercut, or an Action you type. Tap Add Combo for more.
  5. Tap Save Drill.

Action words Fight IQ understands: slip, roll, block, parry, shell, catch, check, step out, angle left, angle right, pivot, pivot rear, low kick, mid kick, high kick, teep, knee, elbow, clinch, clinch break, breathe, and reset. Any other word is called as reset. Keep kicks, knees, elbows, and the clinch for kickboxing drills.

Fight IQ mixes your combos with calls it builds itself, mostly while attacking. In Defense mode it calls its own defensive work.

Sport, mode, and skill level

  • Sport: Boxing calls punches, defense, and footwork, never kicks. Kickboxing adds kicks and knees, plus elbows and the clinch in Pressure and Fight Simulation.
  • Mode: Technical spaces out single moves. Pressure brings short gaps and longer combos. Fight Simulation rotates attack, counters, and defense. Defense sticks to slips, rolls, parries, and movement.
  • Skill Level: Beginner, Novice, Intermediate, Advanced, or Expert. Higher levels get longer combos, up to five moves.

Voices and callout style

In Settings, under Fight IQ Callouts, choose a Coach Voice — The Coach, the default, or Daniel — and a Callout Style. Numbers (1–6), the default, calls punches by number: 1 jab, 2 cross, 3 and 4 hooks, 5 and 6 uppercuts. Names calls every move by name. Defense and footwork are always called by name.

The five starter drills, modeled on the styles of famous boxers, are added on first launch. Edit or delete them like your own; a deleted starter does not come back.

Apple Watch

In Settings on your iPhone, the Apple Watch section shows Watch Paired, Pocket-Boxer on Watch, and Watch In Range. The watch menu has five rows: Solo Training, Timer, Stations, Fight IQ, and Coach. Your templates, presets, and drills come from your iPhone, where you create and edit them.

Feel cues on your wrist

Turn on Apple Watch Haptics in Settings while your watch is in range. When your iPhone runs a session, each cue taps your wrist with its own pattern — round start, rest, 30 seconds, 10 seconds, the final three seconds, round end, and session end. The sound stays on your iPhone. Keep Pocket-Boxer open on the watch; a cue that cannot reach it is skipped.

Heart rate and session summaries

  1. Leave Broadcast Role set to Off in Settings on your iPhone.
  2. Open Pocket-Boxer on your watch, then start any session on your iPhone. The first time, the watch asks for Health access.
  3. The watch shows your live heart rate and the current round.
  4. When the session ends, your iPhone shows a Session Summary: average, peak, and lowest heart rate for each round, plus a Breathing section when Apple Health has readings for that time. It shows Waiting for Watch… until the watch's data arrives.

History, the clock on the main screen, keeps your last 30 watch-recorded sessions with your Day Streak, Best Streak, and Total Time. Tap a session for its heart rate by round. The menu at the top has Share Streak Card and Clear History.

Sessions of 30 seconds or more are saved to Apple Health as boxing workouts. When your watch recorded the session, its workout, with heart rate and active energy, is the one kept.

Train without your iPhone

When your iPhone is out of range, the menu says iPhone not reachable and the watch runs sessions itself:

  • Solo Training lists your rounds templates, plus Default 3 × 3:00 / 1:00, which always works.
  • Timer and Stations run your rounds templates and station presets.
  • Fight IQ asks for a drill, then a rounds template, and speaks your combos in shuffled order. Every combo is used before any repeats, and calls speed up in the last 30 seconds of each round.

The watch plays the bells, says "ten seconds" and "Round 2 of 3" as they come up, taps your wrist for every cue, and records your heart rate. Tap the speaker button to mute, or End to finish early. The workout is saved to Apple Health, and the summary reaches your iPhone when they reconnect.

Start from your watch

With your iPhone nearby, tap a template in Timer or Stations, or a drill and then a rounds template in Fight IQ. It opens on your iPhone, ready to go. Start the clock with a tap on the top half of your iPhone's screen, or, when coaching, with Start / Pause in Coach Remote. Start Session in Solo Training opens the first template in your Intervals list.

Coach Remote

Tap Coach on the watch to control the timer on your iPhone: Start / Pause, −30, +30, Call Back, which sends the Regroup call, Next, and Reset. A header shows the round, work or rest, and the time left. Coach Remote is meant for coaching with Broadcast Role set to Coach; during a solo session, the watch shows your heart rate instead of the menu.

Watch-face complications

Touch and hold your watch face and tap Edit to add one. Quick Solo Start starts a solo session on the watch with one tap: 3 rounds of 3:00 with 1:00 of rest. Live Timer shows the round and time left of a session running on your iPhone.

Coaching and the gym floor

Broadcast to a class

  1. On the coach's iPhone or iPad, set Broadcast Role to Coach in Settings.
  2. On each athlete's device, set Broadcast Role to Fighter and tap Open Fighter View on the main screen. It shows Listening for Coach… until it connects.
  3. Start any session on the coach's device. Fighter devices show the same clock, round, and phase, read-only.
  4. To call everyone back, tap Regroup, the yellow group icon at the top right of the round or station timer. Every device plays five bells, a five-second buzz, and five flashes, as chosen in its own Settings under Coach.

Devices connect directly, with no internet or account needed, and the link is encrypted. Any nearby device set to Fighter joins automatically. Fighter devices stay quiet apart from Regroup; the bells come from the coach's device. While you coach, GET READY appears in red for the last ten seconds of each phase.

Put the timer on a big screen

Connect to a TV or display with AirPlay or a cable. With AirPlay Mirroring on, the default, the display mirrors your screen. Turn it off in Settings, under General, and the display shows only the timer — large digits with the round or station — while your device stays free.

Gym Wall Mode

For a device connected to the gym's speakers, turn on Gym Wall Mode. Cues play at full volume through the speaker, the app stays in landscape, and the screen stays awake. Then choose Gym Wall Audio:

  • Training — cues play loud, and other audio dips while they do.
  • Music — your music keeps the speaker; cues play at ringer volume without interrupting it.
  • Both, the default — cues play at full volume over your music.

Gym Wall Mode also offers Force Max Brightness, Disable Auto-Dim, Hide Secondary Labels for digits only, and High-Contrast Digits for white on black. All are off by default.

Settings

Tap the gear on the main screen, and use Search Settings to find any option. Gym Wall Mode, Fight IQ Callouts, and the Apple Watch section are covered above.

Bell Sounds

Last 3-Second Countdown ticks at 0:03, 0:02, and 0:01. Rest-Start Cue plays the Rest Start sound, instead of Round End, when work turns to rest. Both are on. Below them, one row per cue sets the app-wide sound, which any template, preset, or drill can override. Tap a sound to preview it: Ring Bell, Brass Bell, Deep Gong, Double Bell, Triple Bell, Boxing Bell, or Single Hit.

Cue Default sound
Round Start, Rest Start, Session End Triple Bell
Round End Ring Bell
30s Warning, Last 3s Countdown Tick
10s Warning Ten Seconds, spoken

iCloud Backup

Auto-back up to iCloud, off by default, copies every change to your templates, presets, and drills into iCloud Drive, in the Interval Training Templates folder. Back Up Now uploads everything at once. Restore from iCloud shows what is there and offers Merge into Library, which adds what this device lacks, or Replace Library, which deletes local items and uses the iCloud copy. iCloud Status tells you whether iCloud Drive is available.

Privacy and data

Pocket-Boxer has no accounts, no advertising, and no third-party tracking or analytics code, and nothing you do in it is sent to Rippre. Your data lives here:

  • On your iPhone or iPad: templates, station presets, drills, settings, session history, and a log of session events that stays on the device unless you export it.
  • On your Apple Watch: a copy of your template list, and heart-rate readings until the session summary reaches your iPhone.
  • In Apple Health, with your permission: your sessions as boxing workouts, with heart rate and active energy when your watch recorded them. Pocket-Boxer reads heart and breathing rate to build your summaries.
  • In your iCloud Drive, only if you turn on backup: your templates, presets, and drills.

Your iPhone and watch talk to each other directly, and Coach and Fighter devices connect directly over an encrypted link. Pocket-Boxer uses the internet only if you scan a QR code that contains a web link, and then only to download that template over a secure connection.

To remove your data, delete items in the app, use Clear History, and delete workouts in the Health app. Deleting Pocket-Boxer removes everything it stored on that device; iCloud Drive backups stay until you delete them in the Files app.

Troubleshooting and help

Nothing happens when I tap the timer

The round and station timers have no Start button; the tap zones control them. Tap the top half of the screen, and check that Glove Control is on under Solo Training in Settings.

Personal Training Mode does not silence the bells

That switch has no effect in this build. Set Round Experience to Haptic or None instead.

A drill will not start

If you see No round templates, create one with New → New Interval first.

My watch does not show my heart rate

Heart rate is recorded when Broadcast Role is Off. Open Pocket-Boxer on the watch before you start. If your iPhone shows Heart rate tracking disabled, allow Pocket-Boxer under Settings → Privacy & Security → Health.

Start Session on the watch did not start the clock

It opens the first template in your Intervals list on your iPhone, ready to go; create one if the list is empty. Then tap the top half of your iPhone's screen.
