Keep a verse in view every time you pick up your phone.

Word Unlocked puts a Bible verse on your iPhone Lock Screen, so the screen you check all day brings you back to Scripture. Choose how verses come to you — a verse a day, a weekly plan, a topic, a chapter read in order, a verse you are learning by heart, or your own favorites — and the widget moves on by itself, at midnight or through the day.

There is no account to create and nothing to sign up for. Five complete translations live on your phone and work with no connection at all. Two more — the English Standard Version and the Recovery Version — come from their publishers only when you choose them, within the limits each publisher sets. There are no ads, no tracking, and no analytics.

Features

On your Lock Screen

  • A Lock Screen widget in three styles: rectangular for the reference and up to four lines of the verse, inline for a single line, and circular for the reference.
  • Home Screen widgets in small and medium sizes, drawn in your theme's colors.
  • The widget always shows the same verse as the app, and moves on by itself at midnight or, in the modes that offer it, every 12, 8, or 6 hours.
  • Long verses fit your way: shorten only when needed, show an excerpt, split a verse into parts, show just the reference, or choose shorter verses.
  • Set as Wallpaper turns the current verse into a Lock Screen image placed clear of the clock, on one of six backgrounds, and saves it to Photos.

Seven translations

  • Five complete Bibles live on your phone and never need a connection: the King James Version, World English Bible, Berean Standard Bible, American Standard Version, and Literal Standard Version.
  • The English Standard Version keeps up to 500 verses on your phone — the ones your mode will show next — so the widget shows ESV even offline.
  • The Recovery Version loads while you read, with its publisher's notice beside each verse. It is never stored, so the widget and wallpapers use the King James Version.
  • If an online verse is not available yet, you see the King James Version, labeled KJV, with a note that says why.
  • Change translation any time, and read the license and attribution for each one in the app.

Six ways to rotate verses

  • Daily Verse: a new verse each day or every 8 hours, from the whole Bible, one testament, or Psalms and Proverbs.
  • Weekly Plan: seven verses a week, one a day, from a theme, a chapter, a book, or your own list — the same seven every week, or the next seven.
  • Topic: 26 topics, from anxiety, fear, and grief to hope, peace, and strength, changing daily or every 12 or 6 hours.
  • Chapter: read a chapter a verse at a time, then repeat it, read on into the next chapter, or stop at the end.
  • Memorization: pick a verse to learn by heart, and it stays on your Lock Screen while you work on it.
  • Favorites: rotate the verses you have saved, in order or shuffled, with the option to skip long ones.

Search, favorites, and themes

  • Search the whole Bible by reference or by a word or phrase.
  • Save a verse with one tap from Today or Search. Each favorite keeps the text of the translation you saved it in.
  • Start memorizing any verse straight from a search result.
  • Build a Weekly Plan from search results and your favorites, in the order you choose.
  • Choose from ten themes — from Minimal Light and Parchment to Midnight and Cathedral — for the Today screen and Home Screen widgets.

Private by design

  • No account and no sign-up.
  • No ads, no tracking, no analytics, no crash reporting, and no third-party code.
  • Your settings, favorites, and memorization plan stay on your phone, shared only with the Word Unlocked widget.
  • Nothing about you leaves your phone. Reading the English Standard Version or the Recovery Version sends only verse references, to that publisher's service.
  • Photos access is add-only, and Word Unlocked asks for it only when you save a wallpaper.

Why you can trust it

Word Unlocked collects nothing. It has no accounts, no analytics, no advertising, no crash reporting, and no third-party code. Choosing any of the five complete Bibles never touches the network. Choose the English Standard Version or the Recovery Version, and the app asks that publisher's service for verse references only — nothing about you, and nothing to any server of ours.

It also keeps each publisher's terms. Word Unlocked stores no more English Standard Version text than Crossway allows — 500 verses, and never more than half of any book. Living Stream Ministry's terms do not allow storing the Recovery Version, so it is never saved on your phone. Each translation's license and attribution are in the app for you to read.

Version updates

Word Unlocked is not on the App Store yet. These are its pre-release builds, labeled by date — the version number has stayed at 1.0 throughout, and every change below is in the build being prepared for release.

  1. Weekly Plan build

    Pre-release

    Weekly Plan, and ESV on the widget offline

    • Weekly Theme becomes Weekly Plan: seven verses a week, one a day, from a theme, a chapter, a book, or your own list.
    • Weekly Plan can repeat the same seven verses every week, or move on to the next seven and start over at the end.
    • The English Standard Version now keeps up to 500 of the verses you will see next on your phone, so the Lock Screen widget shows ESV offline.
    • ESV verses download at most once every 48 hours. A verse not downloaded yet shows in the King James Version, with a note saying when the next download can happen.
    • The Recovery Version now loads only while you read and shows its publisher's notice beside the verse. The widget, wallpapers, and Recovery Version favorites use the King James Version.

  2. Mode settings build

    Every mode setting now changes the verse

    • Rotation speed now takes effect in Topic, Chapter, and Favorites — daily, every 12 hours, or every 6 hours — and Daily Verse can change every 8 hours.
    • The widget changes the verse at each of those times.
    • Chapter mode starts at verse 1 of a new passage, then repeats the chapter, reads on into the next one, or stops, as you choose. After Revelation it starts again at Genesis.
    • Favorites can shuffle, with every favorite appearing once per pass, and can leave out long verses without changing the setting for other modes.
    • The day's verse now changes at your local midnight. Before, it could change in the late afternoon.

  3. Seven-translation build

    A seventh translation and a steadier widget

    • The English Standard Version joins as a seventh translation.
    • Lock Screen widgets now show the verse on iOS 17 and later, where they had shown a system placeholder.
    • The app and the Lock Screen widget now choose verses the same way, so they always agree.
    • All 26 topics now have verses in every stored translation, including anxiety, fear, and grief, which had been missing.
    • Exclude Long now picks a shorter verse instead of replacing long ones with Genesis 1:1, and the online translations rotate and work in Search and Memorization.
    • Online verses load more reliably: no false error when you leave the screen, no repeated downloads, and a clear message when a service is busy.

  4. Store preparation build

    App icon and complete setup

    • Word Unlocked gets its app icon: an open book on navy.
    • First-run setup now offers all five stored translations, not just the King James Version.
    • The page dots in setup no longer cover the Next button.
